Letter from Francis, Med Reg RA BLA dated Oct 29th, 1944:

Dear Peter

Very many thanks for your letter of 7th Oct and all your news. Things should be looking up out your way after the terrific fleet engagement recently – a smashing job of work. Things are going “according to plan” here which is an easy non-committal way of describing things! The weather has improved a little and we have had several very fine days after a very wet spell. I am now on a so-called 48 hours leave in Brussels, a very fine name for it owing to it taking five hours to get there, our time was very much curtailed and we spent only a day and a half actually there. This is not much after over four months of continuous action, but it was better than nothing. There is no food to be had except at a rather crowded NAAFI and the beer is like water. We saw Rita Hayworth in “Cover Girl”, a technicolour musical with bags of oomph! ENSA have taken over a smashing cinema for the purpose. Everything is still very festive and be-flagged, but underneath there’s an undercurrent of half-starvation! We’ve certainly got a job on trying to feed all these de-occupied peoples.
